It was good to welcome Paul back after last week’s business trip and my lurgi had disappeared so we opened the night with a few songs and were joined by Sam Fletcher on his accordion for ‘Dirty Old Town’ We try to do at least new one every week and this week we did 2! ‘Wish You Were Here’ by Pink Floyd and a golden oldie from the Bee Gees.
It was good to see Alistair and Matt back, playing together for the 2nd time ever! Alistair has got a new toy-a loop pedal that he is still attempting to conquer! Among the set were 2 Simon & Garfunkel tracks, ‘Cecilia and Sounds of Silence’
Sam Fletcher then took to the stage with Paul’s guitar, finishing with one of the hardest songs to sing, Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’. He did a good job with it.
Frank made a welcome return to The Venue, with his Elvis Presley type renditions of some popular songs. We also saw the return of Helen Monks, the local singing teacher who is famous round these parts for her beautiful singing voice and amazing piano playing. She duetted with Alistair on ‘Valerie’ and I’ve promised her that the piano will be sorted next time she comes to Open Mic. We are lucky to have Helen in the village and look forward to her next ‘student night’.
Alistair and Matt played a few on their own to finish a great night off. A special thank you to John Benton for posting photos and videos on to all of the social media. I’m too old to learn all of this modern technology lark and John is brilliant at it.
All the best,
Alley

With Paul away on business and me laid low with the lurgi, I wondered what sort of night we would have. I needn’t have bothered!
When I walked in, there was our very own folky superstar little Rach, sitting quietly with her guitar at the ready. We haven’t seen Rachel for ages as she has been going through a song-writing/creative period and she’d had a few problems with her throat. She’s recently been on song-writing courses in Scotland, musical cruises in the Caribbean and she was at The Venue to debut some of her new material.
The night started really well with Alistair and Matt. Alistair has been coming along to Open Mic for a while now and recently brought his pal Matt to experience The Venue stage for himself. This was the first time they had played together in front of a live audience and they really were amazing. Highlight for me was their version of ‘Sounds of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel. Later they played solo. Alistair’s guitar playing is truly amazing, Matt’s voice is soulful and haunting. We are lucky to have them as Venue regulars.
Next came Rachel. She started with a folk version of ‘The One That I Want’ from Grease (unbelievable!) and then sang several of her new songs with her incredible take on Patsy Cline’s ‘Crazy’ thrown in for good measure. If there is any justice in this world then Rachel will become a musical superstar. If not, she’ll just keep coming to The Venue every Tuesady, I hope.
Next on the hallowed stage were Sam and Zack, Sam on his Gibson acoustic with his pal Zack playing the Cajun drum. Their other mate Cameron was away so Zack joined Sam with harmonies for the first time. They are so laid back and cool they make me sick!
James Barlow also did a few songs. He is lead singer with his band Massey Green who have played a couple of gigs for us on a Thursday night. They have a strong Lymm following so it’s always a good night when they’re on. James has such a strong, melodic and very modern voice. It’s a pleasure to listen to.
The quality of the performers this week was incredible and we look forward to meeting up again next Tuesday for the best free entertainment in the North West. Tell your friends-come down and see it for yourself. It’s different every week and it’s a great way to spend a chilled out Tuesday.
All the best,
Alley

The Open Mic Night
"Chilled out Tuesday" continues to attract an incredibly talented group of musicians and it really is a night not to be missed. It is a hidden gem of an evening which is discovered by more and more people.
Live music continues on a Thursday night with young up and coming acoustic acts. On Saturdays we have soul and blues from Lucy Barlow from 7pm, with live acoustic music from 9pm. We have other 'surprise evenings' maybe a magician, a jazz event or a Sunday charity function.
We can guarantee that it is the best free entertainment in Cheshire!
